The Minnesota Twins have initiated a significant leadership change as Jeremy Zoll assumes the role of the top decision-maker in baseball operations. This shift comes after Derek Falvey, previously the president of baseball and business operations, parted ways with the organization on March 15, 2024. Described as a “mutual” decision, Falvey’s departure triggers a search for his successor in the business realm while Zoll, who has held the title of general manager, expands his responsibilities.
As the Twins prepare for spring training in Florida, where pitchers and catchers report next Thursday, Zoll is actively seeking ways to enhance the bullpen. Although his title remains unchanged, his role has expanded significantly since joining the organization in 2017. He began as the director of minor league operations before progressing to assistant general manager and finally general manager ahead of the 2024 season.
New executive chair Tom Pohlad expressed full support for Zoll, stating he is “100 percent committed” to his leadership during this transition. “We lucked out with Jeremy Zoll being in this position right now to be able to have the continuity and stability in our baseball department,” Pohlad remarked. He highlighted Zoll’s attributes, including his decisiveness and competitiveness, which are seen as vital for the Twins moving forward.
Zoll now faces the challenge of liaising with ownership, a responsibility that was primarily handled by Falvey since his hiring in 2016. Unlike Falvey, who had Thad Levine as his general manager for a significant part of his tenure, Zoll has not yet appointed a second-in-command. Instead, he plans to collaborate closely with the existing team of assistant general managers and other leaders within the organization.
“We’re all just going to roll up our sleeves and lean in a little bit further,” Zoll stated. He emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach, underscoring plans for daily check-ins with the assistant general manager group and team leaders involved in player personnel.
As he takes on these additional duties, Zoll is expected to lead the organization amid high expectations. Pohlad has set a goal for the Twins to be competitive in 2026, despite the team’s recent struggles, which include finishing in fourth place in the past two seasons. The current payroll is notably lower than the previous year, adding to the urgency of addressing roster issues, particularly within the bullpen.
“I have the utmost belief in Jeremy Zoll,” Falvey stated. He praised Zoll’s dedication, work ethic, and relationship-building skills, expressing confidence that he will continue to advance the team’s interests. While Falvey will remain a resource for Zoll, he believes Zoll is well-prepared to take on the challenges ahead.
As the Twins embark on this new chapter, the organization is focused on reinforcing its competitive edge, with Zoll at the helm of baseball operations. The upcoming offseason will be pivotal as the Twins look to improve their roster and build a stronger foundation for the future.
