Jack Allen Samuelson, Santa Cruz Icon, Passes Away at 91

URGENT UPDATE: Jack Allen Samuelson, a cherished figure in Santa Cruz, has passed away at the age of 91. He died peacefully on December 9, 2025, surrounded by family at his beloved home overlooking Santa Cruz, just shy of his 92nd birthday.

Samuelson, who was born on January 14, 1934, at the “Old Dominican” hospital in Santa Cruz, leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and community service. Known for his vibrant personality and passion for life, Jack was not only a successful technical writer at Lockheed Missiles & Space for 35 years, but a devoted family man and an avid golfer.

His family, including his two children, Julie Walls and Mark Samuelson, and his grandchildren remember him fondly as “Papa Jack.” Jack was deeply involved in their lives, attending every graduation, birthday, and sporting event, where he proudly cheered them on from the bleachers.

Aside from family, Jack’s love for golf was legendary. He was a prominent figure at Delaveaga Golf Course, where he served on the advisory board and participated in numerous local tournaments. His passion for the sport also extended to teaching his grandsons the intricacies of the game, instilling in them the same love he had cherished for decades.

Jack’s adventurous spirit led him to explore a range of activities, from racecar driving at Laguna Seca Raceway to diving for abalone along the northern California coast. His zest for life inspired those around him, and he often shared stories of these thrilling experiences, encouraging others to embrace the excitement of life.

The Santa Cruz community will remember Jack for his generous heart and contributions to various local organizations, including the Santa Cruz Elks and the Santa Cruz Native Sons. His involvement in community events and fundraisers left a significant impact that will resonate for years to come.

In his final months, Jack received exceptional care from a dedicated team of medical professionals at Hospice of Santa Cruz County. His family expressed special gratitude to his primary physician, Dr. Chris Bernardi, and the entire hospice team for their compassionate support during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County in Jack’s honor. A private celebration of his life is scheduled for Spring 2026.
