UPDATE: An inspiring boxing event held on July 15, 2023, at the JW3 cultural centre in London showcased an urgent message of unity and multiculturalism, challenging perceptions about Israel. Young Jewish and Muslim boxers from Israel faced off against British competitors, embodying the spirit of solidarity in a world often divided by conflict.
The event, part of the ongoing Gloves and Doves initiative, featured a diverse team of Israeli athletes, including two Muslims and four Jews. As the athletes entered the ring, vibrant Israeli flags and the slogan “fight for peace” adorned the venue, highlighting a powerful message of coexistence. “We are here for peace, we are here for unity,” stated Tony Milch, a former professional boxer and the initiative’s founder.
This year marked the second trip for the young Israeli boxers to the UK, following a successful event last year in Camden. The aim of Gloves and Doves is clear: to bring together youth from different backgrounds and dispel the myth that Israel is not a multicultural society. “Many attendees are surprised to learn there are Arabs in Israel,” Milch revealed. “If we can change one mind at a time, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to do.”
The event was sanctioned by the renowned World Boxing Council (WBC), amplifying its significance in the boxing community. “Boxing has a uniquely transformative power,” Milch emphasized, noting its popularity among both Jewish and Arab youths in Israel.
Special guest Alireza Ghadiri, also known as Razor Ali, an undefeated professional boxer of Iranian descent, added to the evening’s excitement by interacting with fighters and presenting the coveted Alexander Mashkevitch Award for boxer of the night to Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli from the village of Makr. Majid, the youngest participant, demonstrated exceptional skill, further enhancing the event’s emotional resonance.
British competitor Charles Whitewood, 25, reflected on his bout against an Israeli opponent, stating, “We didn’t trade many words; we traded punches instead, which brought us closer than words ever could.” Whitewood praised the camaraderie felt that night, describing it as one of the best experiences of his boxing career.
The atmosphere at the event was overwhelmingly positive, with participants and spectators feeling a profound sense of connection. “There’s a lot of love in boxing, and it was felt that night,” Whitewood commented.
As global tensions persist, events like Gloves and Doves serve as a poignant reminder of the potential for unity through sports. The initiative continues to fight against stereotypes and build bridges across cultures, fostering relationships that transcend borders.
