UPDATE: Hudson’s hopes for an OHSAA field hockey championship ended abruptly on July 15, 2023, as the Explorers suffered a 3-0 defeat against Upper Arlington in the state semifinal held in Worthington, Ohio. This loss marks Hudson’s first semifinal appearance since 2020.
In an intense match, Hudson struggled to maintain possession against a dominant Upper Arlington team. Despite their efforts, including multiple scoring opportunities that went unconverted, the Explorers were unable to find the back of the net. Head coach Louise Knox expressed pride in her team’s performance, stating, “I am very proud of the fight and the grit the girls showed this season.”
Throughout the game, Hudson showcased brief moments of promise. They controlled the back half of the first quarter, earning two penalty corners, but failed to capitalize on their chances. Senior midfielder Maddie Mormino and junior defender Sophie Martinez worked tirelessly to set up scoring opportunities, yet their shots were either saved or deflected.
Upper Arlington took an early lead, scoring on a penalty corner with 7:26 left in the first quarter. The Golden Bears maintained their momentum, extending their lead to 2-0 in the second quarter. Hudson’s junior goalie Casey Curry made crucial saves to keep the Explorers in the game, but Upper Arlington sealed the victory with a third goal in the final seconds.
Coach Knox praised her team’s perseverance, highlighting their journey throughout the season. “Getting the opportunity to play in this game today was a celebration of all that hard work,” she noted, emphasizing the dedication shown by players who had been training since middle school.
Despite the setback, Hudson finished the season with an impressive overall record of 16-5 and two playoff victories, including a significant win over previously undefeated Shaker Heights. The team’s resilience and growth throughout the season were evident to all, with Knox remarking on the bond the players developed.
The game’s outcome may have been disappointing, but the support from the Hudson field hockey community remained unwavering. Knox reflected on the legacy of the program, stating, “It is about the entire community, not just the players.”
As this season closes, Hudson’s Explorers will carry the lessons learned and the memories made into the next chapter. The community’s dedication and support will undoubtedly fuel their ambition to return stronger next year.
