Hazleton Area Garden Club Honors Veterans with Wreath Placement

URGENT UPDATE: The Hazleton Area Garden Club has just placed a floral wreath at the Blue Star Marker in West Hazleton, honoring all men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Services. This significant event, held annually on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, underscores the community’s commitment to remembering and honoring veterans.

This year’s ceremony took place at the Blue Star Marker located at Route 93 and 15th Street, in West Hazleton Veterans Memorial Park. The club collaborates with local officials, fire departments, and the U.S. Marine Corps to pay tribute to both past and present service members.

The Blue Star Program, initiated by the National Garden Clubs Inc. in 1944, originally aimed to honor World War II veterans. The program began with the planting of 8,000 dogwood trees across the country as living memorials. By 1945, the program had expanded to create the Blue Star Highway System, spanning thousands of miles across the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.

The Blue Star symbol, chosen for its historical significance, became a widely recognized emblem during World War II. It was displayed prominently in homes, churches, and businesses to signify loved ones serving in the military. The first Blue Star Highway Marker was dedicated on February 18, 1948, in Rose Tree Park, Pennsylvania. Since then, the program has seen the installation of markers at service plazas statewide, culminating in a completion project in 2015.

In a powerful tradition, the Hazleton Area Garden Club placed its first Blue Star By-Way Marker in 2006 at The Providence Senior Living facility, which included a tree planting and a tribute from the Marine Corps. The dedication of the second marker in November 2021 further solidified their commitment to honoring veterans.

Each year, the club’s efforts bring the community together, fostering a strong sense of pride and remembrance. The emotional impact of these ceremonies resonates deeply, reminding attendees of the sacrifices made by service members and their families.

As we approach the next Veterans Day in November, the Hazleton Area Garden Club continues to encourage community participation in honoring those who have served. This event serves as a reminder of the ongoing dedication to veterans and the importance of keeping their memories alive.

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming events and how you can participate in honoring our heroes. This is not just a ceremony; it is a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who have safeguarded our freedoms.
