UPDATE: Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts (NCM) hosted an emotional rally honoring President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in Ayer, Massachusetts, this past week. This event marked the 39th annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project and was the first since President Carter’s passing, bringing together thousands of volunteers nationwide to support affordable homeownership.
The rally, held at Habitat for Humanity NCM’s duplex, was a heartfelt tribute to a legacy that spans over four decades. Volunteers engaged in meaningful work, showcasing the profound impact of affordable housing. The rally served not only as a celebration but also as a call to action, underlining the urgency of Habitat’s mission amid ongoing housing challenges.
During the event, Habitat for Humanity NCM Executive Director Carolyn Read emphasized the significance of the Carters’ contributions, stating, “Today, we come together to honor President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, two remarkable individuals whose lives have embodied the very mission of Habitat for Humanity — building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.”
Read highlighted the Carters’ tireless efforts, noting, “Their example reminds us that building a home is about more than wood and nails — it’s about creating hope, dignity, and belonging.” The rally was attended by students, local representatives, and volunteers, all united in gratitude for the Carters’ dedication.
In a touching moment, the community signed a door that will be installed in one of the new homes, symbolizing the collective effort and spirit of service. This rally not only celebrated past achievements but also focused on the future, as families in Ayer prepare to move into newly built homes by the holidays, ensuring a safe and stable environment.
“Because of your commitment, families will be home for the holidays — a gift that truly honors the spirit of the Carters’ work,” Read added, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in advancing Habitat’s mission.
Habitat for Humanity NCM remains dedicated to providing a hand up for low-income families in North Central Massachusetts. Through volunteer labor and donations, they build affordable housing and help families achieve homeownership.
In addition to the rally, Habitat NCM is gearing up for the grand opening of their new Leominster ReStore location at 650 North Main St. on December 11, which will further support their mission through sales of discounted materials. The current ReStore remains open at 637 Lancaster St. until the end of November.
This week’s rally not only honored the Carters’ legacy but also reignited passion for community service and the importance of affordable housing. As Habitat for Humanity NCM continues its vital work, the impact of the Carters’ vision lives on in every home built and every family helped.
