UPDATE: Fourth graders at Brecknock Elementary School in the Governor Mifflin School District unveiled new mock businesses today, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit in a vibrant event. The annual business symposium, held on November 21, drew a lively crowd as students cut the ribbon on their creations within the imaginative “Sweet Read City,” a miniature city set up in the library.
This year’s event featured businesses like GMIS Care Cart and Mustang Keystone, designed to teach students about economics and entrepreneurship through hands-on experience. “Sweet Read City is not just a project; it’s a platform for understanding real-world concepts like community interdependence,” stated Rachel Sebastian, the librarian and organizer of the symposium.
The symposium is the culmination of a comprehensive project where students engage with local businesses, learning about their operations and the career opportunities they offer. This initiative, part of the Total Experience Learning framework, emphasizes experiential education, connecting students directly with community business owners.
Participants included well-known local businesses such as Classic Harley Davidson, East Penn Manufacturing, and Goodwill Industries. “Learning from actual business owners takes education beyond the classroom, providing students with invaluable insights into entrepreneurship,” Sebastian added.
