Glenville Advances to OHSAA Championship After Thrilling 26-21 Win

UPDATE: Glenville is headed to the OHSAA Division IV state championship after a dramatic 26-21 victory over defending champions Indian Valley in a thrilling semifinal showdown. This pivotal match took place at Minerva High School’s Dr. Robert Hines Stadium, where Glenville overcame a significant lead loss to secure their spot in Canton.

With just moments left on the clock, Glenville’s Da’Von McDougle scored the go-ahead touchdown, sealing the win with a crucial fourth-down stop against Indian Valley’s Grady Kinsey. The Tarblooders now face another formidable opponent, Shelby, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday inside Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

“We’re excited to get back to Canton,” said Glenville head coach Ted Ginn Sr. during Tuesday’s OHSAA media teleconference. The team aims for its third state championship in four years and is poised to challenge Shelby’s standout quarterback, Brayden DeVito, a Mr. Football finalist and Air Force commit.

Shelby comes into the matchup with a perfect 14-0 record and a strong playoff performance, including a convincing 42-7 win over Cincinnati Indian Hill in the semifinals. DeVito has been a powerhouse this season, racking up 69 touchdowns—41 passing and 26 rushing—along with 3,144 yards throwing and 1,245 yards on the ground.

“He’s probably one of the most athletic quarterbacks that we’ve seen this year,” Ginn noted, emphasizing the challenge his team will face.

In their previous matchup two years ago, Glenville defeated Shelby decisively, 50-14, in the regional semifinals. However, this year’s rematch presents a different dynamic with DeVito leading a potent offense.

Glenville’s defense will be spearheaded by their own Mr. Football finalist, Cincere Johnson, who delivered an impressive performance against Indian Valley with 17 tackles and multiple game-changing plays. Johnson’s efforts, along with those of his teammates, have propelled the Tarblooders through a challenging playoff run.

“It’s just who we’ve really played against during the regular season,” said senior safety C.J. Newell. “I feel like that plays a big part.” Newell, alongside other key players, has played a crucial role in Glenville’s success, showcasing both defensive prowess and offensive versatility.

As the anticipation builds for Friday’s championship clash, both teams are focused on not just the title, but also the opportunity to inspire their communities. “Our community believes and trusts in us to be an example of hope for our children,” Ginn stated, highlighting the broader impact of high school sports.
