Georgia Soprano Maria Valdes Returns for Urgent VSO Concert

URGENT UPDATE: Georgia-born soprano Maria Valdes is set to return to her roots in an electrifying performance with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra on November 15, 2025. This much-anticipated concert marks a significant homecoming for Valdes, who grew up in the Atlanta area and honed her talents at Georgia State University and the prestigious Governor’s Honors Program.

Valdes will take the stage at 7 p.m. at the Whitehead Auditorium, where she will deliver a powerful rendition of Samuel Barber’s evocative “Knoxville: Summer of 1915.” This piece, commissioned by renowned soprano Eleanor Steber in 1947, transforms James Agee’s nostalgic poem into hauntingly beautiful music. Valdes has previously performed this piece with esteemed orchestras, including the California Symphony and San Jose Symphony.

The concert, themed “Scenes of Life,” will also feature Valdes singing Aaron Copland’s beloved “Old American Songs,” including “Long Time Ago” and “Simple Gifts.” A pre-concert chat is scheduled for 6:15 p.m., providing attendees with insights into the evening’s program.

This year’s concert deviates from the long-standing tradition of a 7:30 p.m. start time, emphasizing the urgency to arrive early and fully experience the performance. Other highlights of the evening will include Barber’s poignant “Adagio for Strings,” Gershwin’s “Catfish Row,” and the Symphonic Suite from “Porgy and Bess.”

Valdes is widely recognized for her exceptional talent, with The New York Times lauding her as a “first-rate singing actress.” Her return to Valdosta is expected to resonate deeply with local audiences, making this event not just a concert, but a heartfelt reunion.
