BREAKING: Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms has just announced his retirement, effective at the end of his current term in January 2027. In a heartfelt open letter released on Friday, Helms revealed he will not seek a fourth term in the upcoming 2026 elections, marking the end of his distinguished career in law enforcement.
At 66 years old, Helms expressed his desire to spend more time with family after decades of dedicated service. “I recently added another year to my birthdays and realize that at 66 years of age I am still young enough to enjoy a few years of retirement,” he stated. He emphasized the sacrifices made during his tenure, missing important family events due to his commitment to public service.
Helms has served as Sheriff since 2015, but his law enforcement career began in 1981 with the Slocomb Police Department. He later joined the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office in 1986, where he held various leadership positions, including Commander of the Geneva County Drug Task Force and Chief Deputy.
“It has been my honor serving the people of Geneva County and surrounding area. I know you will choose the most qualified candidate that will protect and serve God, and all the citizens of the county,” Helms wrote.
His announcement has prompted an overwhelming response from the community, with many urging him to reconsider. However, Helms remains firm in his decision to retire, stating that it is time for “God to lead me on a different path.” He reassured residents that he will continue to serve diligently until a successor is sworn in.
The upcoming months will be crucial for Geneva County as residents prepare to select a new sheriff. Helms encouraged the community to engage in thoughtful consideration of candidates who will uphold the values of public safety and community service.
As this story develops, residents and supporters are encouraged to stay informed about the transition in leadership within the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office. This significant change marks a new chapter for law enforcement in the area and highlights the importance of community involvement in shaping its future.
