UPDATE: Freshman forward Ollie Josephson shined in his NCAA debut, scoring his first career goal during a thrilling 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on October 13, 2023. The game unfolded at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, where the Fighting Hawks struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the match.
Just over 6 minutes remaining in the second period, with the Bulldogs leading 1-0, Josephson seized a shorthanded chance. He intercepted a puck in the defensive zone, raced down the ice unopposed, and deftly flipped it past sophomore goaltender Adam Gajan. “Kind of got a lucky bounce, went past their defender,” Josephson remarked after the game. “Felt really good, especially in a place like this. It was super special.”
Josephson’s impact did not stop there; he also assisted on Ben Strinden‘s game-tying goal with just 1:11 left in the third period. “He’s had a great start so far,” Strinden noted. “He hasn’t gotten the points he’s deserved, but they’re starting to come for him.” Josephson now has a total of one goal and two assists through his first seven games.
The Fighting Hawks were unable to hold on, ultimately succumbing in overtime as the Bulldogs secured the game-winning goal. Despite the loss, Josephson’s performance stood out, particularly while centering the third line against Duluth’s top offensive unit, which failed to score during even-strength play against him. “Thought he did a good job,” said Dane Jackson, head coach of the Fighting Hawks. “His goal was really good. He’s effective; he skates so well.”
Josephson’s transition to NCAA hockey marks a significant step up from his prior experience with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League, where he served as captain and recorded impressive stats last season. The Victoria, B.C. native was selected 105th overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2024 NHL Draft. His journey to this moment reflects his commitment to growth in a highly competitive league.
Looking ahead, Josephson expressed optimism about his development, stating, “I think it’s going well. It’s a really good league, definitely a step up from juniors.” As Josephson continues to adapt, fans will be eager to watch his progression in the upcoming matches. The Fighting Hawks will aim to bounce back in their next game, hoping to leverage Josephson’s emerging talent.
