UPDATE: The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) officially reopened its doors today, inviting visitors to experience its new exhibitions and kick off its centennial celebrations. Guests can explore the striking works of Boston-based artist Tara Sellios in her exhibition, “Ask Now the Beasts,” running through May 24, 2025.
Sellios’s captivating photographs, created using a large format 8 x 10 camera, showcase the beauty of decay through still life vignettes crafted from organic materials, including animal bones and dried flowers. Her work draws inspiration from historical art forms, including Christian devotionals and Dutch vanitas paintings. The title of the exhibition references the Book of Job, delving into themes of life, death, and the cyclical nature of Earth.
In addition to Sellios’s work, the museum is unveiling “FESTIVAL: A Celebration of African Art,” a year-long exhibition highlighting the breadth of FAM’s collection. This collection spans from first millennium CE terra cottas to contemporary sculptures, organized around themes of masquerades, ceremonial life, and domestic life.
Join the centennial kickoff event tonight from 5:30 PM to 8 PM, featuring a special 100th Anniversary Toast and a visit from FAM founder Eleanor Norcross, portrayed by actress Sally Cragin. Attendees will enjoy drinks and appetizers provided by Finicky Fork, alongside a sneak peek of the Centennial Exhibition. While sign-up is encouraged for planning purposes, the event is free and open to the public.
This reopening marks a significant moment for the community, as FAM celebrates its legacy while engaging with contemporary art narratives. The museum encourages visitors to immerse themselves in both the past and present of artistic expression.
