Family Unites: Parents Move In to Care for Husband with Alzheimer’s

UPDATE: A family in Orlando is facing the challenges of early-onset Alzheimer’s as Zahydie Burgos’s husband, Francisco “Pako” Burgos, was diagnosed at just 46 years old. In a heartwarming move, Zahydie’s parents, Roberto and Sara Burgos, have relocated from Puerto Rico to provide crucial support, allowing Zahydie to continue her career while caring for Pako.

Zahydie, a licensed psychologist, first noticed alarming changes in Pako’s behavior in the fall of 2020. He began to struggle with everyday tasks, such as managing finances and communication. “Amazon trucks drove up to our house three or four times a day,” Zahydie recalled, noting that Pako was purchasing items they didn’t need, including expensive hockey merchandise. This red flag led her to seek help, believing he was suffering from depression due to the pandemic.

Despite trying multiple medications, Pako’s condition worsened. The couple’s communication changed drastically; Zahydie described their relationship as being strained for the first time in their 17 years of marriage.

In December 2021, during a routine eye appointment, doctors discovered an abnormality, prompting further tests. A subsequent MRI revealed that Pako’s brain was atrophied, resembling that of an 80-year-old. On January 28, 2022, the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s was confirmed at Johns Hopkins University.

Zahydie was initially in denial, saying, “How can that be? He’s only 46.” Pako, whose father succumbed to Alzheimer’s in 2012, had suspected something was wrong. The diagnosis was a heavy blow, leading the couple to grieve privately for nearly a year.

Today, Pako, now 50, is receiving treatment with a medication called Lequembi and has participated in a clinical trial for another drug, Etalanetug. While Zahydie strives to care for him, she also works full-time, relying on her parents for support. “My 74-year-old father walks 30,000 steps a day to stay fit for Pako and me,” she shared.

The family’s decision to move in together has transformed their dynamic. Zahydie’s parents help with daily tasks, ensuring Pako eats and takes his medication, while respecting his independence. Their support has enabled Zahydie to maintain her career while being present for Pako during this challenging time.

In February 2023, the family decided to share Pako’s diagnosis with extended relatives, who have since rallied around them. Siblings visit often, and Pako’s 85-year-old mother calls daily from Puerto Rico to check on him. Together, they embark on “bucket list” trips, having already visited Athens and Venice, making the most of every moment together.

Zahydie is now an advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness, promoting early detection and support for caregivers through organizations like Us Against Alzheimer’s. “Pako’s diagnosis has upended our lives, but it has also been empowering,” she stated.

The Burgos family’s story highlights the profound impact of Alzheimer’s on relationships and the strength found in community support. As they navigate this journey, Zahydie expresses immense gratitude for her family’s sacrifices and dedication to Pako’s care.

For anyone experiencing similar challenges, Zahydie encourages sharing experiences to foster awareness and connection. This urgent situation resonates with many, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of family and love in times of crisis.
