UPDATE: Fairfax officials confirm that renovations for Fire Station 21 are set to begin in June 2024, backed by a budget of $1.6 million. The much-needed upgrades aim to modernize the facility, originally built in 1974, to enhance safety and operational standards for fire crews and equipment.
Public Works Director Kristin Arnold presented an update to the Town Council, confirming that the project will not exceed the allocated budget. “When we put together the cost estimate in October, we did our best to stay conservative,” Arnold stated. Mayor Stephanie Hellman praised the team for their innovative solutions, highlighting significant cost savings throughout the process.
The renovation project involves a temporary relocation of fire station housing and firefighting equipment to the community center on Park Road. This strategic move will save costs compared to renting trailers, with the community center’s garage able to accommodate the fire engine, keeping response times nearly unaffected.
Inside the community center, renovations will include adding showers to existing bathrooms. The town offices will temporarily relocate to a rental house on Park Street, costing $35,000 for the duration of the project. “The community center is the most economical option that meets the Fire Department’s needs,” Arnold said, emphasizing the importance of efficiency during the renovations.
The council addressed concerns regarding the architect’s contract, which is being amended for the third time. Councilmember Mike Ghiringhelli questioned potential cost increases, asking, “Where does this end?” Architect Jessica Fairchild clarified that her initial contract did not cover the project through completion, bringing the total cost to $158,000.
As renovations are set to conclude in March 2027, the council is taking proactive steps to ensure transparency. Mayor Hellman suggested establishing a dedicated webpage to share all project contracts and design documents with the community.
The council unanimously approved the necessary resolutions, paving the way for the much-anticipated upgrades. “When you’re opening up an existing building, there’s sometimes unforeseen conditions,” Fairchild warned, but expressed confidence in the project timeline.
Residents of Fairfax can expect improved facilities as this crucial project moves forward, reflecting the town’s commitment to safety and efficiency for its fire services. Stay tuned for further updates as the renovation process progresses.
