El Tour de Tucson Kicks Off Honoring Cycling Legend Ralph Phillips

UPDATE: El Tour de Tucson is set to make history this Saturday, November 11, 2023, as it celebrates its 42nd annual ride, expecting nearly 11,000 riders to participate. This year, the iconic cycling event will honor local cycling legend Ralph Phillips for his invaluable contributions to the sport and the community.

The ride kicks off at 7 a.m. from the Tucson Convention Center, where Phillips will be recognized as the Designated Honoree during the event. His dedication has helped elevate El Tour to one of the nation’s premier cycling events, previously drawing a record 10,000 participants last year.

Phillips, a well-known figure in Tucson’s cycling community, first rode in El Tour in 1985, securing third place despite challenging conditions. “We had to wade through the Santa Cruz River with our bikes,” Phillips recalled. His expertise is credited with designing the current 102-mile route, ensuring safety by avoiding water hazards and traffic.

“This ride brings together cyclists from around the globe,” Phillips stated, highlighting the influx of international riders who come to train in Tucson each winter. His connection to the cycling world extends beyond the bike as he co-hosts the event’s radio coverage with local broadcaster Allen ‘Big Al’ Kath, a partnership that has lasted nearly 20 years.

Phillips expressed his gratitude for the honor, saying, “I’m very humbled, I didn’t expect it.” He remains optimistic about the future of cycling in Tucson, especially with the recent opening of the new Tucson Velodrome, which he hopes will attract even more elite cyclists to the area.

Since its inception in 1983, El Tour de Tucson has raised nearly $130 million for local charities, underscoring its significant impact on the community. As excitement builds for this year’s event, the cycling community is eager to witness the legacy of Ralph Phillips celebrated in the heart of Tucson.

Stay tuned as El Tour de Tucson gears up for another thrilling ride, promising not only competitive spirit but also a heartfelt homage to a true cycling pioneer.
