Court Rules Quince Designs Are Classic, Not Copies; Major Win!

UPDATE: In a landmark ruling today, a San Francisco court confirmed that Quince’s designs are rooted in classic styles, not copies, marking a significant victory in its ongoing legal battle against Deckers Outdoor Corporation. The court’s decision, announced on October 22, 2025, deemed Deckers’ claims of trade dress protection for several designs as invalid, underscoring Quince’s commitment to timeless fashion at fair prices.

The court highlighted that at least 14 different companies offer similar designs, reinforcing that these styles are widely available across the market and not exclusive to any single brand. This ruling not only limits Deckers’ ability to claim lost profits but also sets a precedent for the fashion industry about the nature of design ownership.

“Today’s ruling is a win for consumers and for common sense,” said Joel Dion, Head of Legal at Quince. “The idea that Quince, or anyone, should be penalized for providing high-quality, timeless designs at reasonable prices reveals the problematic behavior of some major brands.”

Quince’s business model aims to challenge the misconception that quality cannot coexist with affordability. By working directly with top factories and suppliers—those that also serve high-end luxury brands—Quince offers products made from world-class materials such as Grade-A Mongolian cashmere, fine mulberry silk, European linen, and Italian leather.

Dion further remarked, “The ‘dupe’ label is a convenient narrative pushed by brands that have long overcharged for the same timeless pieces. Quince isn’t a dupe; we’re the antidote, proving that beautiful and timeless design can, and should, be accessible to everyone.”

Quince’s offerings range from luxurious cashmere sweaters to elegant silk slip dresses, ensuring that their designs remain timeless rather than trends that quickly fade away.

As consumers increasingly seek value and quality, this ruling may reshape how brands approach design and pricing in the luxury market. Expect to see Quince continue to stand at the forefront of this movement, advocating for fair pricing and accessibility in fashion.
