Cougars Dominate Citrus with 6-2 Victory on Sophomore Night

UPDATE: The College of the Canyons Cougars delivered an electrifying performance on September 29, 2023, securing a resounding 6-2 victory against Citrus College during their annual Sophomore Night. This decisive win marks a season-high for goals, showcasing the Cougars’ offensive prowess as they bid farewell to their home pitch for the season.

In front of a vibrant crowd, the Cougars (5-11-3, 3-6) celebrated their five sophomores—Diego Briseno, Steven Garcia, Juandiego Rodriguez, Jeffrey Contreras, and Leon Mikailian—before the match, acknowledging their significant contributions to the program.

The action kicked off immediately after halftime. In the 47th minute, Ivan Omana netted his first goal of the season, courtesy of an assist from Andrew Sorto, putting the Cougars ahead 1-0. Just moments later, Omana struck again, extending the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 48th minute, this time assisted by Carlos Mendez.

Citrus (1-18-1, 1-8) responded in the 61st minute with a goal from Kevin Cardenas, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, the Cougars quickly regained control, as Contreras found the net for his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Citrus fought back once more with Cardenas’s second goal, making it a tense 3-2 game. But the Cougars’ offense was relentless. Just one minute later, Rodriguez scored twice—first in the 74th minute with an assist from Justin Assadi, and again in the 87th minute, assisted by Mikailian. Rodriguez’s contributions lifted his season total to three goals.

Mikailian capped off the scoring frenzy with a goal in the 90th minute, solidifying the Cougars’ emphatic 6-2 victory.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Mazon started the match, making two saves, while David Zendejas played the second half and secured the win as the Cougars unleashed a staggering 26 shots, with 17 on target. Citrus goalkeeper AJ Baragan showcased commendable resilience, making nine saves despite the barrage.

As the Cougars wrap up their season, they prepare for a final match against Santa Monica College on October 4, 2023. This thrilling victory not only closes out a memorable home season but also highlights the talent and determination of the team’s sophomores, setting a positive tone for the future.
