BREAKING: Chester has officially unveiled a statue honoring local sports legend Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, marking a historic moment for the community. The statue was revealed on November 6, 2023, and now stands proudly in the park across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.
Mayor Stefan Roots expressed the significance of this tribute, stating, “Her story has inspired the world. Fredia has shown us what’s possible when determination meets purpose.” Gibbs, the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title, is often referred to as “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.” Her incredible journey in professional martial arts spanned over three decades, during which she secured titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK.
This unveiling is not just a celebration of Gibbs’s achievements; it symbolizes the spirit of Chester itself. Mayor Roots emphasized, “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it. It tells them no goal is too big.”
Originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, the statue was transferred to Chester after the university’s closure. Villanova University facilitated the donation, allowing the community to honor one of its most notable figures.
At the emotional ceremony, Gibbs reflected on her roots, saying, “This statue doesn’t just represent me, it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience.” With tears in her eyes, she added, “This city raised me, this city taught me strength.”
The statue was sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, both local artists who contributed to this poignant tribute.
As the statue stands tall, it serves as a reminder of the grit and perseverance that defines Chester. The community is called to celebrate this momentous occasion and reflect on the legacy of a woman who has opened doors for many, especially women in sports.
WHAT’S NEXT: Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the statue and share their experiences on social media. The unveiling has already sparked conversations about the importance of representation in sports and the power of community support.
This landmark event is expected to inspire future generations and reaffirm that greatness can emerge from anywhere, reinforcing the pride Chester holds for its champion, Fredia Gibbs.
