Chesapeake, Severn Run, Spalding Students Engage in Court Simulation

UPDATE: Students from Chesapeake, Severn Run, and Archbishop Spalding High Schools are actively participating in the Schools in the Court Program at the District Court of Maryland for Anne Arundel County today, October 10, 2023. This innovative program allows students to learn about the legal system through immersive simulations, including simulated traffic stops and bail review hearings.

The program is designed to educate students on the consequences of their decisions. During the event, Assistant Public Defender Tiffany Holley guided students through a simulated traffic stop, discussing the legality and implications of various actions in a law enforcement setting. The hands-on experience aims to foster a deeper understanding of the judicial process and its real-world applications.

In a powerful demonstration, Annapolis Police Detective Kamoll McKay conducted a simulated traffic stop, uncovering a mock scenario involving drugs and a firearm. This engaging activity highlighted the seriousness of law enforcement decisions and the potential impact on youth. The involvement of law enforcement professionals adds an authentic layer to the students’ learning experience.

The event also featured a mock bail review hearing where students took on various roles in the courtroom. Chesapeake’s Landon Whittington and Spalding’s Lo Aronstein participated as defendants, receiving feedback from officials on the legal process. The Chief Administrative Judge of Anne Arundel County, Shaem C.P. Spencer, emphasized the importance of understanding legal consequences, stating, “This program not only educates but also empowers students to make informed decisions.”

The Schools in the Court Program serves as a vital educational tool, aiming to bridge the gap between youth and the legal system. By engaging directly with judicial officials and law enforcement, students gain insights that can significantly influence their future decisions.

As the program continues, participants are encouraged to reflect on the scenarios presented and consider their implications in real life. This initiative not only enhances students’ legal knowledge but also promotes community engagement and responsibility among young individuals.

Looking ahead, the program plans to expand its reach, inviting more schools to participate in future sessions. This growing initiative reflects a commitment to educating the next generation about the legal system and its impact on their lives.

Stay tuned for more updates on this engaging program and its future sessions.
