Born on November 11, 1923, in Johnston City, IL, Kay dedicated her life to her family, community, and faith, leaving a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations to come.
Kay’s remarkable journey began as the youngest of seven children, graduating from Johnston City High School in 1941. She moved to Chicago, where she met the love of her life, Ken Waldvogel. The couple married on February 7, 1948, and enjoyed a loving partnership that lasted 72 years until Ken’s passing in 2020.
In 1951, the Waldvogel family relocated from Cicero, IL, to Santa Cruz, CA, where they operated the Waldvogel Mushroom Farm alongside Kay’s older brother. They later settled in Soquel, CA, where Kay lived for over six decades. In September 2021, she moved to Woodland, CA, to be closer to her children.
Kay was a devoted mother, especially to her youngest daughter, Karen, born with Down’s Syndrome. She tirelessly advocated for Karen’s needs for over 65 years, showcasing her unwavering love and commitment. The family was deeply involved with the Santa Cruz County Association for the Retarded and Special Olympics, demonstrating their dedication to the community.
In addition to her advocacy work, Kay volunteered at Dominican Hospital for an astounding 45 years, contributing over 9,000 hours of service. As a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, she participated in the choir and was an active volunteer in various ministries, including the “3 in 1 Ministry,” where she made nearly 1,000 rosaries each year.
Kay’s vibrant spirit extended to her travels with family and friends, creating cherished memories, including a favorite cruise through the Panama Canal. She is survived by her children: Jeanne Locatelli, Ken Waldvogel Jr., and Karen Waldvogel, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry on her legacy.
A private family Celebration of Life was held on November 8, 2025, coinciding with Kay’s 102nd birthday. Family members gathered to honor her extraordinary life and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her. Kay will be laid to rest alongside Ken at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA, with a date to be determined in 2026.
In lieu of flowers, Kay requested donations to her new parish, Holy Rosary Catholic Church-New Church Fund, or Canine Companions, reflecting her compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
