UPDATE: Bismarck High School’s volleyball team has broken a 25-year playoff jinx, sweeping Gideon in a thrilling 3-0 victory during the Class 1 state quarterfinals on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in Gideon, Missouri. This win marks Bismarck’s first appearance in the state semifinals since 1998, and they now boast a record of 37 wins this season.
With the match concluding at scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-23, the Lady Indians showcased their determination and teamwork, overcoming a history of near misses in the playoffs. Senior Halie Dickey expressed the pressure her team felt, stating, “This was our last chance to do it. My parents have been there before, and had a lot of expectations for me. I just want to make them proud.”
Bismarck’s victory comes after a tough season, including a close match against Leopold that tested their resolve. Coach Chelsea Hennes noted the shift in mindset her players experienced after that nail-biting win, saying, “They had us at one point, but then my girls just refused to give up. That mentality is huge heading to state.”
Leading the charge for Bismarck was middle hitter Loryn Pierson, who recorded 15 kills and delivered crucial points to seal the first two games. Ashley Hawkins contributed significantly with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Ayla Hawkins added 14 kills, displaying the depth of Bismarck’s offensive strategy.
As the Lady Indians prepare for their next challenge against Liberal (18-8) on Friday night at The Civic Arena in St. Joseph, their journey has captured the hearts of the community. “We’ve definitely had a lot of growth from junior high up to now. Everyone said this was the group that would make it to state,” Halie Dickey reflected.
The match against Gideon saw impressive performances from both sides. Gideon’s sophomore left-side hitter Layla Watkins led her team with a match-high 20 kills, but ultimately, Bismarck’s powerful offense and solid defense were too much to handle. Coach Hennes praised her team’s evolution, stating, “Their control throughout four years has become so much better to where they can chase a ball down and it’s a dime pass every single time.”
Bismarck’s historic win not only advances them to the semifinals but also underscores their resilience and growth as a team. As excitement builds for their upcoming match, fans are eager to see if the Lady Indians can continue their remarkable journey toward a state championship.
The Lady Indians are now one step closer to achieving what has eluded them for decades, with their eyes firmly set on the ultimate prize. This victory is not just a step forward for the team, but a testament to the hard work and dedication they have invested over the years.
