UPDATE: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has just been awarded the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award from the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) during their annual conference in Duluth, held from October 15-18. This award recognizes individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the fire service, underscoring Sherwood’s exceptional leadership and dedication.
The MSFCA president, Eric Bullen, acknowledged Sherwood’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the fire service both locally and nationally. Bullen praised Sherwood for attending the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., on a scholarship awarded earlier this year. “Chief Sherwood fit in seamlessly with our legislative committee contingency, advocating, with broad knowledge, for greater Minnesota,” Bullen said during the award ceremony.
Under Chief Sherwood’s leadership since 2021, the Bemidji Fire Department has seen significant advancements in capacity, morale, and operational readiness. His vision emphasizes accountability, continuous improvement, and community partnerships, aligning perfectly with the award’s criteria of leadership and innovation.
During a critical response following the devastating storm on June 21, Chief Sherwood demonstrated exceptional crisis management by activating the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan. “Realizing the magnitude of the situation, Chief Sherwood contacted the State Fire Marshal Division and the MSFCA to request additional resources, allowing his staff time to manage their own personal property losses,” Bullen revealed.
The Bemidji Fire Department expressed pride in having such an exceptional leader at the helm. Their Facebook post highlighted the direct benefits of Sherwood’s leadership to the entire community, stating, “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits.”
This award not only honors Sherwood’s contributions but also reflects the spirit of resilience and dedication within the fire service. As the Bemidji community celebrates this achievement, all eyes are on Chief Sherwood’s future initiatives aimed at further enhancing public safety and community engagement.
