BREAKING: Alexander J. Yerman, a respected engineer and cherished family man, has passed away at Albany Medical Center in Schenectady, NY, at the age of 99. He died on January 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and achievement.
Born on August 3, 1926, in Wilmerding, PA, Yerman’s life was characterized by his commitment to family, service, and education. Graduating as Valedictorian from Turtle Creek High School in 1944, he served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. Following his military service, he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1950.
For over 41 years, Yerman worked at General Electric, where he made significant contributions at both the General Engineering Lab and the Corporate Research Lab. His professional dedication was matched only by his love for his family. He married Ellen Quinn in 1955, and together they raised a loving family until her passing in 1994.
Yerman was actively involved in scientific communities, holding memberships with the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, and the Instrument Society of America. He was also a registered Professional Engineer in New York State. In addition to his professional achievements, Yerman enjoyed golfing, tennis, and hiking in the Adirondacks, always cherishing time spent with family.
He is survived by his daughter Fran Cullen, son-in-law Michael, grandchildren Patrick, Eric, Ciara, and Stratton Yerman, along with his sister Virginia Mains and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ellen, children Karl and Teresa Yerman, grandson Connor Yerman, and brother Jack Yerman.
Calling hours for Yerman will take place on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, located at 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville, followed by interment at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
