UPDATE: The CIF-Southern Section girls basketball and soccer playoffs kicked off on February 12, 2023, and 13 teams from the High Desert region have advanced to the second round. In the basketball bracket, the competition was fierce. At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs faced a heartbreaking loss to Mira Costa, ending their playoff run with a score of 45-39. Despite a strong start, led by Bella Rincon’s 12 points in the first quarter, they struggled in the second half, finishing the game with a total of 21 points from Rincon, and 12 points from Carla Rodriguez.
In a stunning upset, Silver Valley triumphed over the No. 2 seed Valley Christian, winning 54-51. Naomi Durrah was the star of the game, scoring an impressive 35 points as she led her team to victory. Silver Valley will now host Warren, who defeated Fontana 50-37.
Barstow also made headlines with a nail-biting 47-45 win over Coastal Christian, thanks to Emily Franco’s remarkable 25 points. They now advance to face Burroughs, who claimed victory over Chaffey 40-32.
University Prep secured their spot in the next round by narrowly defeating Anaheim 40-38, with Camila Zapeta hitting the game-winning shot in the final seconds. They will host Norwalk, who triumphed over Elsinore 44-36.
Victor Valley Christian celebrated their first playoff victory since 2020, edging out Saddleback 28-26. Olivia Metler led the Royals with 10 points and will face Santa Clarita Christian in the next round.
On the soccer front, Granite Hills achieved an impressive 4-2 victory against Culver City, with Lianna Tsabur scoring all four goals. They will next host Temescal Canyon, who defeated Santa Fe 3-0.
Riverside Prep dominated Gahr 5-0, with Jimena Nunez leading the charge. They are set to travel to Segerstrom, which won against Palmdale 2-0.
Adelanto secured a solid 3-0 win over Temecula Prep, marking their third consecutive year advancing in the playoffs. They are slated to host top-seeded Beverly Hills, who won in penalty kicks against Knight.
