URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking initiative has just been announced that will significantly impact students at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). The $1 million donation from renowned economist and educator Dr. Bradley R. Schiller has established the Schiller Foundation Economics Scholarship, aimed at supporting LTCC students transferring to four-year universities.
This newly created scholarship is designed for students who have shown a strong interest in economics and are ready to further their education. “Dr. Schiller dedicated his career to helping students understand how economics shapes the world around them,” said LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco. He emphasized the scholarship’s role in honoring Dr. Schiller’s impressive legacy while empowering future scholars.
The scholarship offers up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of two years for each recipient. Specifically, $7,000 will be allocated to tuition and fees at the four-year institution, while $3,000 will assist students with books, housing, and other educational expenses.
Eligibility criteria include completion of two college-level economics courses, acceptance to a four-year college, and a strong academic performance, with a minimum GPA of B average in both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. Preference will be given to those who have completed at least 30 units at LTCC.
Dr. Schiller, who has taught at prestigious institutions including the University of California at Berkeley and American University, has an extensive background in economic policy and education. His textbooks, such as “The Economy Today,” are widely used, and his insights have been featured in major publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
“In education, doors open to opportunity and understanding,” Dr. Schiller stated. “This scholarship aims to help LTCC students see how economics connects to everyday life and supports their success at a four-year university.”
Applications for the scholarship will be available soon on the LTCC Financial Aid webpage, with details forthcoming. Students are encouraged to visit https://ltccfoundation.org/ for more information.
This announcement comes as part of a broader effort to enhance educational opportunities within the Lake Tahoe region, ensuring that students are not only prepared for academic challenges but also equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
