The John D. Spreckels Center in Coronado is expanding its fitness offerings by introducing Zumba Gold classes on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings. Starting March 2024, these low-impact dance fitness sessions will take place at 1019 7th Street, with classes scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. Led by certified instructor Marg Stark, the classes aim to accommodate a diverse group of participants, including working individuals and adults of all ages.
Zumba Gold is designed to be gentler on the joints compared to traditional Zumba, featuring no pivots or jumps while maintaining the infectious energy of Latin and pop rhythms. Stark describes the experience as “exercise in disguise,” where participants feel like they are having a night out dancing without the late hours or the need to travel downtown.
Research indicates that group dance classes can provide significant health benefits. Stark notes, “It’s the combined power of cardio, the brain work following the steps, and the socialization you get dancing with a community” that contribute to weight loss, lower risks of dementia and heart disease, improved mood, and decreased fall risk. The emphasis on community is a core aspect of the Zumba Gold classes, which encourage social gatherings and the celebration of special occasions.
Last year, the Zumba Gold group participated in several local events, performing at the Coronado Film Festival during the beach screening of “Mamma Mia” and participating in the Main Street “Small Business Saturday” events. These engagements highlight the class’s commitment to community involvement and fun.
Participants are encouraged to wear sneakers and bring a water bottle to each session. Walk-in rates are set at $17, but those who register for a monthly session can reduce the cost to $12 per class for Coronado residents. Additionally, Stark offers a discount for individuals who sign up for both class days, making participation more accessible.
For those interested in joining, registration for Saturday classes is available online. For further inquiries, individuals can contact Marg Stark directly at [email protected]. Stark, who resides in Imperial Beach, brings a decade of experience in teaching Zumba and fostering community engagement through dance.
This expansion of the Zumba Gold program at the Spreckels Center reflects the growing demand for accessible fitness options that cater to diverse populations while promoting health and wellness in a vibrant social environment.
