Vanderbilt University’s women’s basketball team clinched a significant victory on March 3, 2024, defeating their in-state rivals, the Tennessee Volunteers, with a score of 87-77. This match, held in Knoxville, marked the conclusion of the regular season and showcased the resilience and skill of the Commodores.
The game began with Tennessee demonstrating strong performance, leading Vanderbilt by six points at halftime. Vanderbilt struggled to contain Tennessee’s offensive efforts during the first half, which proved challenging. However, the dynamics shifted dramatically in the second half. Vanderbilt outscored Tennessee 30-15 in the third quarter, establishing a nine-point lead entering the final period.
Vanderbilt maintained its momentum in the fourth quarter, showcasing impressive defensive intensity. The Commodores did not allow Tennessee to regain control, securing their victory. Star guard and National Player of the Year candidate, Mikayla Blakes, led the team with an outstanding 34 points. Freshman guard Aubrey Galvan also contributed significantly, scoring 24 points in this crucial win.
The victory marked a historic moment for Vanderbilt, as it was their 27th win of the season, setting a new program record for most wins in a single season. With upcoming Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament and NCAA Tournament games, the Commodores are well-positioned to extend this record further.
This win was also a milestone for head coach Shea Ralph, as it represented her 100th career victory at Vanderbilt. Under her leadership, the team currently holds a remarkable record of 27-3 and has earned the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament, along with a double-bye.
After the game, Ralph expressed her enthusiasm for the team, stating, “I love my team. I’m having such a fun time this year. I don’t remember the last time I’ve had this much fun coaching. They are a really good basketball team, obviously. They’re coachable, but I feel like every time we come to play a game, whether we’re home or away, no matter the circumstances, we learn something, we grow, and we figure out a way to win.”
Vanderbilt’s triumph over Tennessee not only highlights their strong performance this season but also sets the stage for an exciting postseason. As they prepare for the SEC Tournament, the Commodores aim to capitalize on their momentum and continue their successful campaign.
