Vanderbilt Defeats LSU 31-24, Achieves Best Start Since 1948

In a stunning display of determination, the No. 17 Vanderbilt Commodores triumphed over No. 10 LSU with a score of 31-24 on October 21, 2023. This victory marks Vanderbilt’s best start to a season in 75 years, improving their record to 6-1, a feat not achieved since 1948. The Commodores also celebrated their first win against LSU since 1990, snapping a ten-game losing streak against the Tigers.

A Game of Resilience

Vanderbilt’s quarterback, Diego Pavia, played a crucial role in the victory, throwing for 160 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 86 yards and two additional touchdowns. This performance not only showcased Pavia’s skills but also highlighted the strength of a Vanderbilt offense that has been averaging an impressive 43.2 points per game this season.

In a game that featured only the fourth meeting between the two ranked teams since 1947, the Commodores managed to score the highest number of points against LSU this season, despite facing a defense ranked fifth nationally for allowing just 11.8 points per game. Vanderbilt’s ability to capitalize on opportunities was evident, as they punted just twice throughout the match, both occurring in the fourth quarter.

Missed Opportunities for LSU

The Tigers, now standing at 5-2 for the season, struggled to convert opportunities into touchdowns. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, including a notable 62-yard pass to Zavion Thomas. Nonetheless, LSU was forced to settle for four field-goal attempts, with kicker Damian Ramos successfully making kicks from 48, 42, and 23 yards, while missing a 52-yarder.

LSU coach Brian Kelly acknowledged his team’s missed chances, stating, “We had opportunities, we didn’t cash in on them.” The Commodores’ defense, ranked 16th nationally, effectively thwarted LSU’s running game, forcing the Tigers to rely heavily on their passing strategy.

As the game progressed, LSU’s best chance to regain momentum came in the fourth quarter, trailing by seven points. However, a pivotal sack by Zaylin Wood on Nussmeier halted their advance, leading to another quick punt and effectively sealing the victory for Vanderbilt.

Looking Ahead

This win not only ensures Vanderbilt’s eligibility for postseason bowl games but also extends their streak in the AP Top 25 to six consecutive weeks. Coach Clark Lea emphasized the importance of this victory while maintaining focus on the remainder of the season. “Ultimately we have a lot of season left, and we’re going to celebrate this win,” Lea stated. “But this game won’t define our season. There’s a lot more for this team to accomplish.”

On the other hand, LSU will look to bounce back as they prepare to host No. 4 Texas A&M on October 25, while Vanderbilt will face No. 16 Missouri on the same day. The outcome of these upcoming games will be crucial as both teams strive to solidify their positions in the competitive Southeastern Conference.
