Santa Anita Cancels Racing Due to Severe Weather Disruptions

Santa Anita has canceled thoroughbred racing on December 31 and January 1 due to severe weather conditions caused by a storm impacting Southern California. The decision, announced early Wednesday, marks the continuation of disruptions experienced at the track, which saw the opening of its winter-spring season delayed from December 26-27 to December 28-29.

The cancellations have drawn attention from horsemen and racing enthusiasts alike. In an update issued after 7 a.m. Wednesday, Santa Anita confirmed that some of the races from the canceled days will be included in a makeup card scheduled for January 8. This adjustment aims to minimize the impact on participants and fans.

Forecasts indicate that racing is expected to resume on January 5, 6, and 7, although track officials are closely monitoring conditions. According to AccuWeather’s report on Wednesday morning, there is a 75% chance of rain in Arcadia before the first race starts at noon, with expectations of 100% rain on January 1, 84% on January 5, 25% on January 6, and 88% on January 7.

Impact of Weather on Racing

Historically, California racetracks have managed to conduct races on muddy surfaces. However, following a spike in fatal injuries to horses in early 2019 during an unusually wet winter, protocols have shifted, leading to more frequent cancellations. This year’s weather-related interruptions have further sparked discussions about safety and race conditions.

Despite the postponement of the opening day from December 29 to December 31, a notable crowd of 41,962 attended the first day of racing. This turnout proved larger than normal, showcasing continued interest in the sport. Highlights from the day included victories by Goal Oriented in the Malibu Stakes and Nysos in the Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes, demonstrating the excitement that continues to surround Santa Anita, even amid challenging weather conditions.

As the situation develops, both fans and participants will be watching closely, hoping for improved weather and the return of racing to Santa Anita.
