The Rocky River Pirates showcased their impressive skills on December 12, 2025, defeating Cleveland Heights 58-32. This victory marked the Pirates’ seventh consecutive win after a rocky start that saw them lose their first two games of the season. The team’s strong performance has reinvigorated their confidence as they continue to build momentum.
Rocky River coach Jamey Pfahl praised his team’s efficiency, stating, “We ran the way that we normally would. Our offensive and defensive rebounding is dominant.” The Pirates capitalized on their height advantage, as their tallest player, 6-foot center Elizabeth Lang, played a pivotal role in the game. Lang recorded a remarkable 16 rebounds and contributed 13 points, achieving a double-double.
The defensive strategy employed by Rocky River was evident from the outset. The Pirates held Cleveland Heights to just two points in the first quarter, leading 21-2 by the end of the period. The rebounding battle was heavily in Rocky River’s favor, with a first-half total of 32-15, and an overall advantage of 42-27.
Lang expressed her impact on the game, saying, “With those rebounds, I was able to pass (the ball) back out to my teammates for big 3s.” One of those teammates, Nora Bruder, also shined, sinking five three-pointers during the match. Bruder attributed her success to the team’s fast-paced transition play, noting, “(Cleveland Heights) was not that great at getting back quickly. Our point guard Olivia Dewey is always looking to push the ball up the court.”
Bruder’s performance was particularly notable, as it was the third time this season she has made at least five three-pointers in a game. With a total of 112 three-pointers over the past three years, she is just five away from tying the school record held by Nicole Popovich from 2013 to 2016. Bruder stated, “I don’t really think about it when I am in a game. I play my game, do the best I can. Whatever happens, happens.”
The trio of Bruder, Lang, and Dewey has consistently averaged at least 10 points per game throughout the season. In this match, Dewey contributed four points and delivered six assists, showcasing her playmaking abilities. Pfahl emphasized the unselfish nature of his players, stating, “(Bruder, Lang and Dewey) are playing so unselfishly. This is not just one person. We all play really well together.”
As the game progressed, Rocky River maintained their momentum. They quickly built a commanding lead and, despite a brief response from Cleveland Heights, the Pirates continued to dominate. They ended the third quarter leading 51-17, initiating a running clock due to their substantial lead.
In addition to the standout performances, Claudia Roche, another key player for the Pirates, added five points and three assists to the team’s tally. The Pirates are set to continue their season with a game against Olentangy Berlin on December 28, 2025. Meanwhile, Cleveland Heights fell to a record of 5-5 and will face Massillon Jackson on December 29, 2025.
With their current trajectory, the Rocky River Pirates are poised for a strong remainder of the season, demonstrating both skill and teamwork in their recent games.
