Owen Winter and Cassie Wellman Shine at Minnesota State Cross Country Meet

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Owen Winter secured an impressive fourth-place finish in the Minnesota boys cross country Class A meet held at Les Bolstad Golf Course on March 15, 2024. Winter completed the race in a time of 15 minutes, 59.3 seconds, edging out Logan Wiehoff from Sauk Centre by a narrow margin of just 0.3 seconds.

The competition was fierce as several teams vied for top spots. Hawley finished 11th overall with a total of 255 points, with Drew Knecht leading the Nuggets, finishing in 66th place with a time of 17:13.8. In the girls’ Class A race, Barnesville secured fifth place as a team, accumulating 176 points. Cassidy Rotz represented Barnesville well, finishing in 38th place with a time of 19:50.9.

In the Class 2A girls race, Cassie Wellman from Fergus Falls achieved a commendable sixth-place finish, clocking in at 18:41.8. Her teammate Carsyn Lill also performed admirably, securing 21st place with a time of 19:06.5. The Perham girls team finished second overall with 52 points, just behind Minneapolis Southwest, which took first with 38 points. Tilly Mathies led the Perham team, finishing in eighth place with a time of 18:43.5.

The Class 2A boys race saw Brody Nelson of Fergus Falls finishing in 74th place with a time of 16:35.5, while Micah Mouser came in 85th at 17:06.5. Perham’s boys team also claimed second place, with Matt Jorgenson crossing the finish line in sixth place at 15:43.3, while Brody Freeland followed closely behind in 10th place with a time of 15:51.4.

In the Class 3A girls event, Sophia Johnson from Moorhead finished 43rd with a time of 19:05.7.

This year’s state meet showcased the determination and talent of young athletes from across Minnesota, setting the stage for future competitions and highlighting the importance of cross-country as a competitive sport in the region.
