Old Dominion University (ODU) will host its baseball games at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex at TowneBank Field starting in 2026, albeit with temporary seating arrangements due to renovation delays. The university announced plans to install seating for approximately 1,000 fans, primarily located beyond the left-field fence. This arrangement will include food trucks, beverage stations, and a party lounge tent equipped with televisions to broadcast the games.
The renovations, initially expected to be completed by early 2026, have encountered delays attributed to necessary adjustments involving storm-water retention and the relocation of utility lines underneath the stadium. As a result, some construction work will remain ongoing during the season.
Last season, ODU was forced to play its home games at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton and Norfolk’s Harbor Park. The Monarchs are scheduled to kick off the upcoming season with a three-game home series against Quinnipiac from February 13-15, 2026.
Baseball Developments and Community Engagement
The temporary seating will provide a unique fan experience, incorporating elements such as a standing-room railing for spectators to enjoy views from above left field. This innovative approach aims to maintain a vibrant atmosphere at the stadium while renovations progress.
In addition to the baseball news, ODU’s athletic programs continue to garner attention across various sports. Notably, running back J’Mari Taylor from the University of Virginia earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors, standing out as the only first-team selection among Virginia players. Taylor led the league with 997 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.
Virginia Tech, in contrast, had only two players recognized on the All-ACC list. The selection process involved an 82-member voting panel, which included media representatives and all 17 ACC head coaches.
Spotlight on Local Athletes
In addition to collegiate achievements, local athletes are making headlines in various sports. Western Branch midfielder Kate Ward was named to the VHSL Class 6 all-state field hockey second team. Meanwhile, in basketball, Christopher Newport University saw success with player Toa Hollenbeck earning the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week after averaging 21.5 points in two victories.
Old Dominion’s volleyball program also continues to develop, with coach Fred Chao adding transfer player Atlyn Proctor to the 2026 recruiting class. Proctor, a standout from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, accumulated 639 kills over two seasons.
As ODU prepares for the opening of its new stadium, the community can look forward to an exciting season of baseball, alongside continued recognition of local talent across various sports. This blend of athletic achievement and fan involvement underscores the university’s commitment to creating a dynamic sporting environment in the years ahead.
