Mavericks Triumph Over Patriots in First WDA Dual Match

The Dickinson Mavericks boys wrestling team secured their first win of the Western Dakota Association (WDA) season by defeating the Bismarck Century Patriots 39-26 on January 15, 2026. The match, held at Dickinson High School, marked a significant moment for the Mavericks, who had previously competed only in non-conference matches and individual tournaments.

DHS head coach Jeremiah Hayes emphasized the importance of fundamentals leading up to the dual, stating, “We’ve been hammering to wrestle with fundamentals this week and staying in positions throughout the whole dual.” This focus paid off, as the Mavericks demonstrated improved positioning and technique, which contributed to their successful performance against the Patriots.

The victory improved the Mavericks’ record to 3-1 in dual play and marked their first WDA win of the year. The team capitalized on the strengths of their lower-weight wrestlers to gain an early lead, which proved crucial given the depth of Bismarck Century’s heavyweight division.

Jacob Wolf and Max Glaser both recorded technical falls at 107 and 114 pounds, respectively. Jake Glaser made a notable impact by securing the fastest pin of the evening just 56 seconds into his match at 121 pounds, putting the Mavericks ahead 16-0 early on.

Hayes praised his lower-weight wrestlers, saying, “We got a lot of very talented wrestlers in our lower weights… That is just awesome momentum that transfers to our other guys.” He acknowledged Wolf’s growth as a young wrestler, attributing his success to his practice partners and the dedication of the Glaser brothers, who have consistently excelled in their training.

The highlight of the match came at 133 pounds, where junior Wyatt Turner, ranked No. 2 in the state, faced off against No. 3 Grady Iverson. Turner dominated the match, securing a 21-6 technical fall by taking Iverson down three times, further extending the Mavericks’ lead. This victory improved Turner’s season record to 21-8, showcasing his consistent performance throughout the campaign.

Coach Hayes noted Turner’s athleticism and strength at the 133-pound weight class, stating, “He’s very blessed with a lot of great athleticism… We’re driving home fundamentals with him.” Turner himself attributed his success to the focus on classic fundamentals taught during practice, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a low stance and looking to score continuously.

The Mavericks are set to return to competition on January 20, 2026, for a Quad Meet in Watford City, where they will face Mandan, Williston, and Watford City. With their recent victory, the team aims to build on their momentum and continue their successful season in the WDA.
