Marcus Caldeira, a standout forward for the West Virginia University men’s soccer team, has signed a one-year contract with Major League Soccer’s Minnesota United FC (MNUFC). This announcement follows Caldeira’s selection as the 20th overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft. The contract includes club options for the 2027, 2027-28, and 2028-29 seasons, pending the receipt of his P-1 Visa.
Khaled El-Ahmad, the Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director for MNUFC, expressed enthusiasm about Caldeira joining the team. “We’re excited to welcome Marcus to our club and look forward to seeing him continue his development while adding depth and competition to our team this season,” El-Ahmad stated.
Impressive College Career
Caldeira’s tenure at West Virginia was marked by remarkable achievements. Over four years, he played in 84 games, starting in 77, and accumulated 5,956 minutes on the field. During this time, he scored 42 goals and provided 15 assists, placing him second in all-time goals for the Mountaineers.
His senior season was particularly noteworthy. Caldeira scored a career-high 14 goals, leading the Sun Belt Conference and earning the title of Sun Belt Player of the Year. He ranked fourth nationally with six game-winning goals and had a standout performance against in-state rival Marshall, scoring three goals in two matches. Additionally, he achieved a hat-trick in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against St. John’s.
In his sophomore year, Caldeira scored 12 goals, which not only led the Sun Belt but also earned him recognition as a second-team All-American by United Soccer Coaches. He was a key player in helping WVU secure the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
Aiming for Success in MLS
Caldeira’s journey in professional soccer signifies an important step in his career. With MNUFC finishing fourth in the Western Conference last season, he is eager to make an impact. “I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to join this ambitious club and take the next step in fulfilling my lifelong dream of playing professionally,” Caldeira said. “I can’t wait to get started and contribute to the continued success of this club, its supporters, and the incredible atmosphere that Allianz Field brings.”
As he transitions from college to the professional level, Caldeira’s accomplishments at WVU have set high expectations for his contributions to the team. His performance will be closely watched as he embarks on this new chapter in his soccer career.
