As the winter basketball season approaches, the MAC Red Division is poised for one of its most competitive years in decades. With the season beginning in January, teams have already demonstrated their potential with a combined record of 21-5 through December 15, 2025. Coaches across the six-school league are optimistic about the depth of talent available, which they believe could make every team a contender.
Stephen Benard, head coach of Grosse Pointe South, expressed that this season’s MAC Red Division is arguably the toughest it has ever been, noting that a record of 7-3 could be sufficient for a playoff berth. This anticipation sets the stage for a thrilling basketball season ahead as teams prepare for holiday showcases and tournaments.
Defending Champions Face New Challenges
The defending champions, Warren Lincoln, finished last season with an impressive 23-4 record and a perfect 9-0 in the MAC Red Division. The Abes have dominated the league in recent years, winning multiple district and regional titles. However, this year presents a unique challenge as the team lost its top six players to college programs.
Despite the turnover, Lincoln is not without talent. The roster is filled with promising young players, including sophomore standout Julian Edison, a 6-foot-4 wing, and guard/forward Ignire Muhammed, who is also 6-foot-4. The team comprises three seniors, six sophomores, one freshman, and four juniors, indicating a strong foundation for future growth. Although the Abes started the season with a 2-2 record, they have scheduled a rigorous non-conference slate to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Rivals Ready to Compete
Port Huron Northern, which finished second in the MAC Red standings last season with a record of 15-9, is off to a strong start this year at 3-0. The Huskies return key players, including Alex Jamison, a 6-3 guard and last season’s runner-up for MAC Red MVP. Jamison averaged 15.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists last season and has continued to demonstrate his skills.
Senior guard Amir Moreland and senior guard Cam Harju, both of whom received All-League honors, form a formidable backcourt. Their combined experience and talent contribute significantly to the team’s prospects this season, making Port Huron Northern a strong contender.
Clinton Township Chippewa Valley also has high aspirations after finishing third in the league last season with an 18-7 record. The Big Reds are led by senior forward Jaden Brown, who averaged 11 points and eight rebounds last season and has elevated his performance this year. Alongside him, senior point guard Joshua Johnson and senior guard/forward Brandon Bellante are expected to play pivotal roles in their campaign.
While Roseville has faced challenges with a roster overhaul, the Panthers have started the season with a surprising 5-0 record. Coach Rashard Porter has instilled a fast-paced style of play that utilizes their athleticism. Key players such as senior guard/forward Ryan Davis and junior point guard Xion Curry are contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Macomb Dakota, with a 14-10 record last season, has shown improvement this year, starting at 4-1. The Cougars possess a deep roster with nine seniors, including standout players like senior guard Tovin Williams, who averaged close to 20 points per game last season. Their depth and versatility make them a formidable opponent in the league.
Lastly, Grosse Pointe South, despite a challenging season last year with a record of 9-15, is off to a promising start at 4-1. The Blue Devils have several returning starters, including junior point guard Kooper Richards and sophomore guard/forward Jamison Spratt, both expected to elevate their performance this season.
As the MAC Red Division gears up for a competitive winter, the excitement among players and coaches is palpable. With each team showcasing unique strengths and a wealth of talent, fans can anticipate an exhilarating season ahead.
