Late Mia Love Receives Inaugural Martha Hughes Cannon Award

Mia Love, the late representative from Utah, was posthumously awarded the inaugural Martha Hughes Cannon Legacy Award on Monday, recognizing her significant contributions as the first Black Republican woman elected to the United States Congress. The award ceremony took place at the Utah State Capitol, where Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, a long-time friend of Love’s, presented the honor.

During her speech, Henderson recounted her initial contact with Love during her mayoral campaign in 2010. The two developed a strong friendship that endured through various challenges. “Public service is about what you can do to help other people fulfill their opportunities,” Henderson reflected, highlighting Love’s dedication to serving her community.

Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer in March 2022 and passed away in March 2023 at the age of 49. She served two terms in Congress from 2015 to 2019. The award she received is presented by Utah Women Run, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training women for public office. This award marks a new chapter in the organization’s efforts to honor impactful women in politics, following three years of bestowing the Martha Hughes Cannon Award to various Utah women.

Henderson drew parallels between Love and Cannon, the first female senator elected in the United States in 1896. She emphasized Love’s commitment to empowering others: “Mia taught me that I belong in the room. You belong in the room. We deserve a place at the table.”

Accepting the award on behalf of his late wife, Jason Love expressed deep gratitude for the honor. Standing before a backdrop featuring the Utah Women Run logo, he emphasized Love’s passion for public service, stating, “She was so honored to serve the people of Utah for so many years at the city level and federal level.” He reminisced about her love for campaigning, noting that she often knocked on doors with her children, fostering connections with voters.

In addition to Love’s recognition, Utah Women Run honored five other women for their contributions to politics. Among the recipients were Candice Pierucci, the Utah House Majority Whip, and Angela Romero, the House Minority Leader, each acknowledged for their impactful roles within their political parties. Former Salt Lake City School Board member Kristi Swett was recognized for her local government efforts, while State School Board member LeAnn Wood received an award for her advocacy work. Holly Daines, the mayor of Logan, was also celebrated with the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event served not only as a tribute to Love’s legacy but also as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to empower women in political roles across Utah and beyond.
