Lakeview Girls Basketball Aims for Success Under New Coach

Lakeview girls basketball is gearing up for a promising season as they look to build on their first winning record in a decade. Under the leadership of new head coach Aaron Whalen, the Wildcats are determined to continue their upward trajectory following a 13-11 overall record last year. This marked a significant achievement, as it was the team’s first winning season since the 2012-2013 season.

The Wildcats face the challenge of adapting to a new coaching regime, with Whalen being the team’s second head coach in two years. Despite the transition, the players are approaching the season with optimism. “Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen noted. “They’re very eager to keep working and just play as a team.”

With only one senior, Katelyn Buchner, on the roster, the Wildcats will rely on their youthful energy and enthusiasm. “I feel like we’re definitely still getting used to each other a little bit,” Buchner shared. “Once we start fully understanding each other on the court, we’re going to be good defenders and very good on offense, too.”

Whalen, who has a background coaching competitive teams in Grand Rapids, emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment for the players. He is committed to prioritizing their experiences over his own. “This is about their experience, not mine,” he stated. “We’re trying to make a big deal about every little thing.”

The Wildcats have retained two starters from last season, including Buchner and junior Madison Bristol. Buchner believes their previous experience will be invaluable as they take on new challenges this season. “We’ll kind of have that little advantage of showing the people who haven’t been on the team before what they can expect,” she explained.

In addition to honing their skills, the team is focused on developing a strong defensive strategy. “We hope to see our ball handling improve like it did last season,” Buchner added. This emphasis on fundamentals is a key part of Whalen’s coaching philosophy, as he encourages players to work on specific areas for improvement.

As the Wildcats prepare for their upcoming games, expectations are high. Whalen anticipates that it may take a few matches for the team to fully gel, but he remains confident. “The kids are eager to learn and they want to win,” he stated. “They want to play hard.”

Buchner, now in her fourth year at the varsity level, is stepping into a leadership role as the only senior on the team. She aims to develop her communication skills and foster a strong team dynamic. “Taking part and actually being a captain is helping me to develop more,” she noted.

Whalen recognizes Buchner’s leadership qualities, stating, “Katelyn is a natural leader and the girls respect her.” With the team’s strong attitudes and commitment, the Wildcats are poised to make a significant impact this season.

The new coaching staff and a roster filled with young talent set the stage for an exciting season ahead. As the Wildcats embark on their journey, they aim to not only compete but to enjoy the experience as a cohesive unit. “You can expect us to compete every week and progressively see us gel well together,” Whalen concluded.

With their first games already underway, the Lakeview girls basketball team is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, aiming to enhance their skills and build on last year’s success.
