Ferriday High School’s varsity basketball teams showcased their dominance at the Rayville Tournament last Friday, achieving decisive victories over Tensas Parish High School. The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Panthers 68-29, maintaining their perfect tournament record and improving to 7-2 overall.
In the girls’ game, Ferriday took control early, establishing a 22-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their defensive prowess intensified in the second quarter, during which they limited Tensas Parish to just four points while scoring 24 themselves. This surge resulted in a commanding 46-16 advantage at halftime.
Despite a surprising third quarter where Tensas Parish outscored Ferriday 8-5, the Lady Trojans still held a 51-24 lead heading into the final quarter. Ferriday regained its offensive momentum, scoring 17 points while restricting Tensas Parish to just five. A’Ziyah Jefferson led the scoring with an impressive 26 points, supported by Chermika Jones with 15 and Cherish Early with 12.
Tensas Parish was led by Abrielle Hill, who contributed 12 points. Other scorers included Autrice Vaughn with six points, Amber Marie Wyatt with four, and Naboria Holmes with three, alongside Takiyah Smith and Aburee South, who each added two.
Following this victory, the Lady Trojans faced the host team, Rayville High School, on Saturday, December 30, 2023. The outcome of that game was not reported at the time of this article. Looking ahead, Ferriday will host Peabody Magnet High School at 18:00.
In the boys’ competition, the Ferriday Trojans, currently ranked No. 1 in the LHSAA Non-Select Division IV, continued their winning streak with a commanding 91-35 victory over Tensas Parish. Ferriday established a 22-10 lead after the first quarter and maintained pressure throughout the game. Although Tensas Parish stayed competitive, being outscored 27-23 in the second quarter, they trailed 49-33 at halftime.
The second half saw Ferriday pull away decisively, outscoring Tensas Parish 25-11 in the third quarter and 17-9 in the fourth. Five players from Ferriday finished in double figures: Macia Maxon, Robert Taylor, and Jammion Woods each scored 12 points, while BeBe Terrell and C.J. Washington added 10 points apiece.
Tensas Parish’s D. Percy topped the scoring charts for his team with 17 points, followed by A. Brown with 13 points. With this victory, the Trojans improved to 13-0 overall, solidifying their status as a formidable force in the tournament.
Next, the Trojans will travel to Fayette for the Jefferson County Shootout, where they are scheduled to face South Pike High School on Saturday, December 27, 2023, at 15:00.
