Chico State Basketball Teams Secure Nail-Biting Victories

The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams delivered thrilling performances on January 5, 2024, achieving hard-fought victories over Cal State Los Angeles at Acker Gym in Chico. The women’s team won 60-57, while the men’s team edged Cal State Los Angeles 70-69, both improving their standings in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Chico State’s women’s basketball team enhanced their record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in CCAA play. The Wildcats initially fell behind, trailing 9-2 within the first two minutes of the game. However, they rallied to take a 13-12 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Despite losing the lead briefly in the third quarter, Chico State fought back, outscoring their opponents 14-4 in the final period to secure the win.

Madison Parry was a standout player, leading the Wildcats with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Nseije Ortiz contributed 12 points, while Meadow Aragon added 9 points and 12 rebounds. As a team, Chico State dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Cal State Los Angeles 45-30. The Wildcats are set to play again at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

In the men’s game, Jeremiah Dargan’s late-game heroics secured a narrow 70-69 victory for Chico State. Trailing 45-38 at halftime, the Wildcats mounted a strong second-half comeback, outscoring Cal State Los Angeles 32-24. Dargan led the team with 23 points, while Chris Holley contributed 13 points, alongside six rebounds and five assists. Cortevious Taylor also made an impact with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams are now gearing up for their next matches, with the women’s game scheduled for 1 p.m. and the men’s game at 3 p.m. on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
