Cameron Smotherman is recovering after a frightening incident during the weigh-ins for UFC 324. On the morning of March 15, 2024, the bantamweight fighter collapsed face-first shortly after successfully making weight. Medical personnel on site promptly attended to him, lifting him from the floor and transporting him off the stage before he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Later in the day, the UFC provided an update on Smotherman’s condition, confirming that he had undergone CT scans for his head and neck, which returned clear results. He received a few sutures before being discharged from the hospital.
Smotherman Addresses Concerns
On the evening following the incident, Smotherman took to social media to reassure fans about his health. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, “I appreciate all of the genuine concern about me. I am completely OK. I’m good.”
Smotherman also addressed speculation regarding the cause of his collapse, noting, “I see a lot of people online saying, ‘Oh, it was a crazy weight cut,’ stuff like that. I genuinely didn’t cut very much weight for this fight. I came in pretty low.” He emphasized that he had not undergone a significant weight cut during the week leading up to the event.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the incident, Smotherman confirmed that he would undergo additional tests in the coming weeks to determine the cause of his collapse. He reassured fans and supporters: “I appreciate the corner. I’m completely OK, and hopefully I’ll be back soon. I apologize to my opponent.”
Impact on Upcoming Fight
Smotherman was scheduled to compete against fellow fighter Ricky Turcios in an undercard bout at UFC 324. However, due to his medical situation, that fight has been canceled.
Smotherman joined the UFC in 2024, making a strong debut with a unanimous decision victory over Jake Hadley. Since then, he has faced challenges in the octagon, suffering back-to-back decision losses to Serhiy Sidey and Ricky Simon earlier in 2025.
As he recovers, the MMA community watches closely, hoping for a swift return to the sport for the talented bantamweight.
