Dozens of middle school students demonstrated their engineering prowess on March 24, 2024, during the VEX Robotics Competition held at Elizabethtown Community & Technical College in Kentucky. The event, known as the “Clash of the Robots,” brought together 29 teams from across the state, all eager to test their robots in a series of timed matches on a 12 x 12-foot field.
Participants were tasked with building robots capable of navigating various challenges, showcasing not only their technical skills but also their teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Among the competitors was James Howl, a 16-year-old from team Asterisk in Louisville, who meticulously measured the height of his team’s robot prior to the competition. His attention to detail exemplified the dedication required to succeed in this challenging environment.
Young engineers like Archer England, a 12-year-old from Bluegrass Middle School, spent time perfecting their robots right up until competition time. England noted the excitement and pressure that came with the event, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving their goals. “It’s great to see what we can build together,” he remarked.
The atmosphere was charged with energy as teams prepared their robots for the competition. Emilie Osborne, representing team Iterated, made last-minute adjustments to her robot, ensuring it was ready for the challenges ahead. The excitement was palpable among the participants, as they shared their experiences and techniques in the lead-up to their matches.

Tori Bennett, a 14-year-old competitor from West Hardin Middle School, described the thrill of the competition, stating, “It’s amazing to see our ideas come to life and compete against others who share the same passion.”
Additionally, Landon Kin and Zain Ahme, both students from TK Stone Middle School, brought their enthusiasm to the competition, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that defines the VEX Robotics community.
