Beloved Navy Veteran and Engineer James Sheehy Passes Away at 84

James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy, a revered husband, father, grandfather, Navy veteran, and aerospace engineer, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by family in Redondo Beach, California, he leaves behind a legacy marked by service, dedication, and a love for adventure.

Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He was preceded in death by six siblings: Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis, their children, James and Shannon, his grandson Matthew, and his brother Dennis.

A Distinguished Military and Engineering Career

Jim served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His service included time aboard the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. This period instilled in him a lifelong sense of discipline and pride.

After his military service, Jim transitioned into a successful career as an aerospace engineer. He worked with several reputable organizations, including Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. His contributions to projects such as the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs highlighted his technical expertise and commitment to advancing national defense and space exploration.

A Life of Service and Adventure

For sixteen years, Jim was an active member of Rotary International, reflecting his commitment to community service. He also celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025 as a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous, embodying the principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service.

Travel was a significant part of Jim’s life. He and Alexis explored all seven continents, visiting 103 countries and more than 500 cities together. His adventurous spirit remained unyielding despite personal challenges, including a serious back condition diagnosed in 2012. Rather than allow this to limit his life, Jim adapted by using a walker, later upgrading to a “sport walker.” He completed the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon with this walker and continued to finish five additional marathons.

Jim Sheehy will be remembered not only for his achievements and contributions but also for his intelligence, perseverance, and generosity. His devotion to family and friends, coupled with his passion for life and travel, created lasting memories for those who knew him. He leaves behind a profound impact that will be felt by many.
