Young Boy Raises $2,000 for Homeless Dogs Through Can Collection

A four-year-old boy from Oxford, Michigan, is making a significant difference in his community by raising $2,000 for homeless dogs through a simple yet impactful can-collecting project. Easton Peterson embarked on this charitable initiative as part of a school assignment focused on helping those in need.

Upon learning that many dogs live without permanent homes, Easton felt compelled to act. “Doggies! Because they don’t have homes,” he explained, showcasing his heartfelt motivation to assist animals in need. With the support of his family, Easton began collecting bottles and cans to turn in for cash, transforming what started as a small project into a daily family endeavor.

Daily Commitment to a Noble Cause

Now, the Peterson family dedicates their weekdays to this cause, pushing carts filled with cans and bottles. “Every single day our trunk is completely full,” said Easton’s mother, Alexandra Peterson. The routine not only provides a source of income for K9 Stray Rescue, but it also brings joy to Easton, who feels fulfilled by his contributions. “We’re just so proud,” Alexandra added.

Easton’s efforts have garnered significant attention, leading to a broader impact on the community. Betsy Barnaba, the intake and kennel manager at K9 Stray Rescue, noted the profound effect of Easton’s work. “He’s just a four-year-old boy. The ripple effect has been unbelievable,” Barnaba stated, highlighting how one child’s initiative has inspired many.

A Community Response to Kindness

Through his can collection, Easton has raised at least $2,000, and local businesses, including Meijer, have begun to contribute as well. “It has just been beautiful. It’s almost like that domino effect,” said Alexandra, referring to the community’s growing support for Easton’s project. Barnaba added, “We have dubbed it the kindness train, because it just keeps chugging along.”

When he is not out collecting cans, Easton enjoys dreaming of becoming a professional golfer and spending time with his dog, named Hashbrowns. He expresses his gratitude to those who support his cause with a simple yet heartfelt message: “I love you.”

Barnaba emphasized the importance of community involvement in their mission, stating, “Without the help of the community… and families like Easton, we can’t do what we do.” On December 2, 2023, coinciding with Giving Tuesday, Easton and his family plan to present the total amount raised to K9 Stray Rescue, marking a significant milestone in their charitable journey.
