William & Mary Athletics Achieves Record Graduation Rates

William & Mary Athletics has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence, achieving remarkable graduation rates as reported by the NCAA on November 19, 2023. For the 21st consecutive year, the institution’s Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) stood at an impressive 87%, positioning it among the top two Division I public universities in the United States. This figure significantly surpasses the national average of 68% for all student-athletes.

In addition to the FGR, the NCAA also assesses the Graduation Success Rate (GSR), a metric that includes student-athletes who transfer into the institution while excluding those who transfer out in good academic standing. William & Mary achieved a GSR of 96%, which is a one-point increase from the previous year and matches its best score in the history of this report. The NCAA’s overall GSR for this year remained steady at 90%.

Outstanding Performance Among Peers

William & Mary’s GSR ranks fourth nationally among Division I public institutions, and it is third in the state of Virginia. Notably, the Tribe excelled with 14 teams reporting a perfect GSR of 100% for this cohort, including every women’s sports program. This achievement marks the 16th time in the past 21 years that ten or more W&M programs have reached a GSR of 100%.

Four teams, including men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, and women’s golf, have consistently attained a perfect GSR every year since the report’s inception. Other teams that have maintained commendable streaks of over five consecutive years with 100% GSRs include men’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming, and women’s tennis.

Additionally, six programs achieved a perfect FGR of 100%. Teams that produced this exceptional score include women’s cross country and track and field, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, and women’s tennis.

Comprehensive Success Across Programs

Overall, 18 out of 19 of the Tribe’s athletic programs (with cross country and track and field combined) reported GSR scores above their respective national averages. This data encompasses student-athletes who began their higher education in the fall of 2018 and includes a four-year average for those who first enrolled between the fall of 2015 and the fall of 2018.

The consistent academic success of William & Mary Athletics reflects its dedication to fostering a culture of achievement both on the field and in the classroom. This commitment not only enhances the institution’s reputation but also positively impacts the student-athletes, preparing them for future success beyond their collegiate careers.
