SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. — After an extensive career spanning 48 years, with the last 12 years as sheriff, Michael Zurlo officially retired in a ceremony held at the Paul E. Lent Public Safety Facility. The event celebrated his dedication to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department and the community he served.
Reflecting on his lengthy service, Zurlo expressed a deep-rooted connection to the people of Saratoga County. “I love the passion. I love the people I work with. I love the residents of Saratoga County,” he stated. His journey in law enforcement began in Mechanicville, where he was born and raised, before advancing to the role of sheriff.
The ceremony drew law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions, local and state officials, and family and friends, all braving the inclement weather to honor Zurlo’s contributions. “It’s just nice that we connected with a lot of people in this job,” he remarked, acknowledging the turnout that included many he had not seen in years.
Family Tribute and Awards
During the ceremony, Zurlo’s son, Andrew Zurlo, traveled from North Carolina to pay tribute to his father. Andrew emphasized the values of integrity and commitment that his father instilled in him throughout his life. “Watching you over the years showed me what true integrity looks like,” he said, highlighting the sacrifices Zurlo made for his family while serving the community.
Zurlo’s career was recognized with several honors during the ceremony, including the Honorable Discharge Award, which is granted to individuals who have served their community with distinction. Jeff Brown, the undersheriff and sheriff-elect, presented the awards and noted that Zurlo exemplified the qualities expected of a county sheriff.
In his farewell address, Zurlo expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his career. “Today marks the end of an incredible 12-year journey as the Sheriff of Saratoga County,” he stated. He expressed confidence in Brown’s ability to continue the positive legacy of the sheriff’s office.
A Commitment to Community
Looking forward, Zurlo shared his excitement about spending more time with family, particularly his seven-month-old granddaughter, Lily. He also expressed a desire to travel with his wife and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle after years of dedicated service.
As he concluded his remarks, Zurlo emphasized his commitment to the community, stating, “I can tell them I did my job 150%. I worked hard, seven days a week, 365 days a year, 24/7 to give them the best protection that they can have.” His dedication to providing resources for his team and ensuring the safety of residents was a hallmark of his tenure.
