The Santa Maria Camera Club celebrated its annual Awards Reception on January 24, 2024, at the Lake Marie Valley Club, honoring members for their exceptional photographic talents and contributions to the organization. The event highlighted the achievements of club members and served as a platform for the formal installation of the new Board of Directors.
During the evening, Jim McKinnis was awarded the prestigious title of Photographer of the Year. This recognition is given to a member who has consistently demonstrated excellence in photography throughout the year. The club also presented the Shepard Award to Elaine Calvert for her dedicated service and leadership as vice president.
Community and Collaboration in Photography
The event was attended by club president Jeanne Sparks, who emphasized the welcoming nature of the group. “We invite local photographers to join our fun-loving group,” Sparks stated. “A love of photography is all that is required. Our members range from those using smartphones for casual photography to individuals employing sophisticated equipment and editing software.”
The club fosters an inclusive environment where members can share their passion for photography, learn from one another, and enjoy social interactions. SMCC organizes a variety of activities, including monthly in-person meetings in Santa Maria, online competitions, Saturday breakfast gatherings, and field trips throughout the month. Members can choose their level of engagement, making it accessible for all skill levels.
“Whatever they choose, they will find friendly members who will receive them warmly,” Sparks continued. “We treat each other with respect and kindness. We have become like family and are always happy to welcome new members to our group.”
