Reading Woman Receives Rotary Honors for Empowering Girls

A dedicated advocate for women’s and girls’ rights in Pennsylvania has received notable recognition from the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club. Suzanne Cody has been named a Paul Harris Fellow and the first recipient of the club’s People of Action Award for her impactful work with the annual Help a Girl Out campaign.

Cody, who serves as the director of business development at Muhlenberg Greene Architects in Wyomissing, co-founded the grassroots initiative alongside Alison Pakradooni. The program focuses on collecting and distributing menstrual hygiene products and diapers to support low-income women and girls in Berks and Schuylkill counties.

Commitment to Community Support

During a recent ceremony held at the Berks YR Club, Mary Cook, district governor of Rotary District 7430, presented the awards to Cody. Cook highlighted the significance of Cody’s contributions, stating, “Through her outstanding leadership in establishing the Help a Girl Out initiative, Suzanne has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of women and girls in Berks and Schuylkill counties.”

Gail Landis, the Rotary District 7430 public image director, noted that Cody’s ongoing efforts exemplify the values and mission of Rotary. “Her work ensures menstrual security and upholds the dignity of those she serves,” Landis added.

The Paul Harris Fellow designation honors individuals who align with the humanitarian objectives of Rotary, while the People of Action Award recognizes leaders who positively impact their communities. According to Deb Brubaker, the foundation director, the awards celebrate those who embody the Rotarian value of “service above self.”

Cody expressed her gratitude during the ceremony, stating, “This honor will sustain me on the hard days, the long days and the tired days. It refills my glass, while I in turn fill the glass of others.”

Global Recognition for Local Efforts

With the presentation of the Paul Harris Fellowship, Cody joins a distinguished group of individuals recognized globally for their unwavering commitment to community service. Landis emphasized that Rotary Clubs consist of individuals dedicated to improving lives and creating lasting changes in communities worldwide.

The core focus areas of Rotary include promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, supporting education, saving mothers and children, fostering local economic growth, and protecting the environment. “The recognition of Suzanne Cody aligns with these humanitarian objectives and underscores the impact of dedicated community leaders,” Landis stated.

Cody’s recognition serves as a testament to the power of grassroots initiatives and the importance of community support in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations. Her work continues to inspire others in the region to contribute to meaningful change, fostering a spirit of goodwill and collaboration.
