Officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) spread holiday cheer on November 22, 2023, by distributing 400 turkeys to families in need at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This initiative marked the first annual food drive organized by various groups within the NYPD, including the Detectives Endowment Association, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, and the NYPD’s Hispanic Society.
Scott Munro, President of the Detectives Endowment Association, emphasized the importance of community connections. “This is to show that our Detectives care about the communities they work in and they want to give back to these people,” he stated. Munro acknowledged that many individuals face challenges during this time of year and expressed a desire to alleviate some of that burden.
Building Bridges Through Kindness
The sentiment of community support was echoed by Retired Detective Barbara Williams, who serves as an NYPD Chaplain. She highlighted the event’s role in fostering relationships between officers and local residents. “This helps to bridge the gap between community and us,” Williams noted. “We are all one family, and we want these people to know we go through the same struggles that they go through despite us wearing a blue uniform.”
Families lined up eagerly to receive their turkeys, grateful for the assistance during the holiday season. Shari Owens, one of the recipients, expressed her appreciation. “This time last year I had two heart attacks and I flatlined twice while at the hospital. I am thankful for the gift of life this year,” she shared. Owens plans to use her turkey to help her niece, emphasizing the importance of supporting one another during difficult times.
Another recipient, Carlos DeJesus, reflected on the meaning of Thanksgiving. “Thanksgiving is a lot about giving back and being thankful,” he said. DeJesus felt a deep sense of gratitude this year as his family faced significant challenges. “My wife beat cancer and my daughter lived through a bad car accident,” he explained. “I am thankful for life and health. If a turkey brings us together, that’s all I can ask for.”
The food drive not only provided essential assistance to families but also reinforced the bond between the community and law enforcement. As the NYPD continues to engage in initiatives like this, the focus remains on building a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
