Neddy Latimer Honored as Shelter’s Namesake in Leominster

The Leominster community celebrated the naming of a new shelter in honor of Neddy Latimer, the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, on October 16, 2023. The shelter, now called the Neddy Latimer House, aims to provide support and assistance to individuals and families in need of a fresh start.

A Celebration of Dedication and Community Impact

The atmosphere during the naming ceremony was filled with joy and gratitude as community members gathered to recognize Latimer’s lifelong commitment to service. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, described the shelter as “a beacon of hope.” He emphasized Latimer’s dedication to helping those in need, recalling how she inspired the creation of the shelter to address the pressing requirements of families in the area.

“Neddy said we have to do this, there are children and families in need,” Bushman remarked, underscoring the vision behind the project. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts that led to the shelter’s opening, highlighting the contributions of the Spanish American Center, United Way, and Opportunities for Hope.

Over $3 million was invested to ensure the facility met safety codes and provided an inviting environment for its future residents. Bushman expressed pride in the team’s work and their shared mission to support the community.

Community Leaders Praise Latimer’s Legacy

Mayor Dean Mazzarella also spoke at the event, thanking Latimer for her decades of service to the community. He humorously noted the difficulty of saying no to her when it comes to funding essential projects, calling her “an amazing leader.” Mazzarella encouraged attendees to channel Latimer’s energy and legacy into future endeavors.

The event was supported by various organizations, including the United Way of North Central Massachusetts (UWNCM). President and CEO Kory Eng praised Bushman’s team for their efforts, noting that the Spanish American Center consistently leads in initiatives that uplift the vulnerable members of society. Eng stated, “This program is about people regaining their dignity. That’s what Neddy represents.”

During the ceremony, board chair of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, Thomas Hughes, described the gathering as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He remarked on how Latimer has influenced the community profoundly, emphasizing that the Neddy Latimer House is a symbol of care and compassion.

Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, watched with pride as the event unfolded. He received a certificate and flowers on behalf of his wife, who was visibly moved during the ceremony. When Neddy took the podium, she expressed her gratitude with emotion, stating, “This place will become a beacon of hope. From the bottom of my heart…thank you for your contribution and commitment to the Neddy Latimer House.”

The ceremony concluded with a toast to Latimer and Alvarado, followed by a communal meal and a tour of the shelter, which features a welcoming design aimed at making residents feel at home. Father Julio Granados offered a benediction, highlighting the goodness in everyone and wishing that the shelter serves as a place of peace and renewed hope.

The Neddy Latimer House stands as a testament to Latimer’s unwavering dedication to her community, ensuring that her legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire future generations.
