Lobos’ Jason Eck Wins Coach of the Year; Son Jaxton Earns DPOY

The University of New Mexico’s football program celebrated a significant achievement on Tuesday as head coach Jason Eck was honored as the Mountain West Conference’s Coach of the Year. In a remarkable twist of fate, his son, linebacker Jaxton Eck, shared the title of Defensive Player of the Year with Chris Johnson of San Diego State. This unique occurrence marks a potential first in NCAA Division I history, where both a father and son have received such prestigious accolades in the same season.

The accolades reflect a transformative year for the Lobos, who have seen a resurgence under Eck’s leadership. Since his appointment, the team has restructured significantly, adding more than 70 players to the active roster. Currently boasting a record of 9-3, New Mexico is set to participate in the New Mexico Bowl against a team from Conference USA on December 27, 2023.

Historic Achievements Amidst a Remarkable Season

Jason Eck’s recognition as Coach of the Year is particularly noteworthy as he is the first Lobos coach to earn this title since Rocky Long in 2002. Long’s achievement was remarkable, as he was the only coach in Mountain West history to win the award without a winning record. Under Eck’s guidance, the Lobos have not only improved their performance but have also made strides in fostering a competitive spirit within the conference.

Jaxton Eck’s remarkable performance this season has not gone unnoticed. Leading the team with 126 tackles, he also recorded a safety and successfully executed a pass during a fake punt. His selection as Defensive Player of the Year breaks a 41-year drought for the Lobos, as the last player to receive this honor was Johnny Jackson in 1982, when New Mexico was still part of the Western Athletic Conference.

The Eck family is not alone in their success this season. Keyshawn James-Newby, an edge rusher, earned first-team honors after leading the team with eight sacks, alongside two forced fumbles. Tight end Dorian Thomas also made the first-team offense with impressive statistics, including 53 catches for 545 yards and four touchdowns. Offensive lineman Kaden Robnett earned recognition on the second team for his outstanding performance, allowing no sacks throughout the season.

The Lobos are not only making a name for themselves on the field but also establishing a legacy for the program. Noteworthy contributions come from players like Damon Bankston, who was recognized as the league’s top kick returner after averaging 30.4 yards per return, including a touchdown return of 100 yards.

Legacy and Future Prospects

The accolades awarded to the Lobos players demonstrate the depth of talent in the program. Additional honors include defensive lineman Brian Booker, kicker Luke Drzewiecki, punter Daniel Hughes, receiver Keagan Johnson, and defensive end Brett Karhu, who were all named to the honorable mention team. Drzewiecki stands out as UNM’s top-scoring kicker in history, while Hughes has gained social media fame for his entertaining insights into life as an Australian-born kicker and the oldest player on the team.

This season has been transformative for New Mexico football, particularly given the challenges faced over the past decade. The Lobos have navigated through coaching changes and rebuilding efforts, ultimately positioning themselves for a competitive future. With the current roster and the promising talent emerging from the program, expectations for the upcoming bowl game and future seasons are high.

As the Lobos prepare for their upcoming matchup, the recognition of both Jason Eck and Jaxton Eck underscores the potential for continued success. Their achievements not only highlight individual excellence but also reflect a burgeoning program poised for further achievements in collegiate football.
